LightSquared G4 and GPS

Earlier in 2011, it was revealed that US company LightSquared’s anticipated G4 network would interfere with GPS.

LightSquared intended to use satellite networks alongside terrestrial networks and the company maintains that the GPS industry was aware of the potential for interference from its G4 system and should have taken preventative steps.

There have also been suggestions at international level that the GPS industry could adjust receiver designs to prevent interference from future technologies.

The situation regarding the development of LightSquared’s G4 system is fluid and future testing will confirm the position. Interference with GPS systems may have to be tempered before LightSquared can launch its network, however.
